Silverberg: The good, the bad and the ugly from Week 9

By Joel Silverberg / @JoelSilverberg

The Big 12’s playoff hopes got a little thinner with Texas losing while the Pac-12’s are still hanging on by the same thread as last week thanks to Washington State’s comeback win over Stanford.

Both SEC divisions are up for grabs this weekend as well when Alabama travels to LSU and Georgia visits Kentucky.

Week 10 is shaping up to be a good one, but first, here’s the past weekend’s good, bad and ugly.

Good: Georgia. The Bulldogs ran away from Florida in the second half for a nice bounce back win after the loss to LSU a couple weeks ago. Jake Fromm did more than just manage the offense with three touchdowns. Georgia can all but seal the SEC East with a win over Kentucky next.

Honorable Mention: Washington State. The big road win at Stanford combined with rival Washington’s loss gives the Cougars a cushion in the Pac-12 North. Mike Leach’s team is home against Cal, at Colorado, then home against Arizona and the Huskies to close out the regular season.

Bad: Texas. The Longhorns let a slow start against Oklahoma State to bite them and the playoff hopes for Texas are likely gone. However, Tom Herman’s team still controls its destiny for a spot in the Big 12 Championship.

Honorable Mention: Wisconsin. The Badgers had championship aspirations at the start of the season. After losing to Northwestern by two scores Wisconsin needs a lot to go its way just to win its division.

Ugly: Oregon. A week after their playoff chances disappeared the Ducks were mentally still in Washington after getting blown out by Arizona. J.J. Taylor ran for 212 yards and a pair of scores for the Wildcats. Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert completed only half of his throws for less than 200 yards as the Ducks have dropped two straight.

Honorable Mention: Washington. Other than Washington State surviving it was a rough week for the Pac-12. The Huskies scored a touchdown midway through the first quarter and managed only three points the rest of the way in a 12-10 loss to California.
