Silverberg: The good, the bad and the ugly from Week 11

By Joel Silverberg / @JoelSilverberg

In a rather odd weekend the top ten went 10/10 on Saturday and only Oklahoma was in danger of losing after stopping a late 2-point conversion attempt from Oklahoma State in the annual Bedlam rivalry.

Four of the top ten teams defeated ranked opponents. The last two weeks before championship Saturday are shaping up to be chaotic.

Here’s this week’s good, bad and ugly.

The Good: Ohio State. The Buckeyes went on the road and shut down a good Michigan State squad just a week after Ohio State struggled to put away Nebraska. If the Buckeyes win at Maryland this Saturday and Michigan takes care of business against Indiana the Big Ten East will come down to one of the most storied rivalries in college football. The winner gets Northwestern in the conference title bout.

Honorable Mention: Texas. Ten years after the Longhorns were stunned by Texas Tech with a last-minute touchdown pass down the right sideline they returned the favor in a fashion so similar it’s scary. Texas isn’t going to the College Football Playoff, but the win over the Red Raiders kept slim hopes of going to the Big 12 title game alive for the Longhorns. Texas will need help from West Virginia in a couple weeks, but the Iowa State game this week is huge for Tom Herman’s team.

The Bad: Kentucky. The Wildcats still had a lot to play for despite missing out on the SEC East with last week’s loss to Georgia. However, Benny Snell and the offense never got going for Kentucky and the turnovers piled up in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats were pounded by Tennessee in Knoxville.

Honorable Mention: NC State. Remember when NC State was 5-0? The Wolfpack have lost three of four with defensive struggles being a big reason why. Once a top 15 team NC State still has a favorable schedule to finish 9-3, but Thursday’s loss to Wake Forest might have left a potential ten-win season on the table.

The Ugly: Oregon. There’s no shame in losing to a gritty Utah team by a touchdown, but a slow developing play in the final 15 seconds followed by spiking the ball with no time left on the clock is a tough way to lose.

Honorable Mention: Iowa. The Hawkeyes have lost three straight games by a combined 12 points, resulting in Iowa missing out on the Big Ten West after falling to Northwestern at home on Saturday. The Hawkeyes put up only ten points in a must-win game. Not a recipe for success.
