KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee sophomore Evan Russell was named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team on Thursday afternoon, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Academic All-America teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their contributions on and off the field. Russell is one of 34 players at the Division I level to be named an Academic All-American and is just the seventh Tennessee player to earn the distinction in program history.

The Vols have now had players earn Google Cloud Academic All-America honors in back-to-back seasons after not having a representative for 13 straight years. Nico Mascia was a second-team Academic All-America selection in 2018.

Russell boasts a 3.64 GPA while majoring in finance and had an impressive sophomore season on the field as well. The designated hitter/outfielder finished the year ranked third on the team with six home runs, 39 RBI, a .446 slugging percentage and a .382 on-base percentage. His .274 batting average and 75 total bases also ranked fourth on the team.

The Lexington, Tenn., native set career highs in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and stolen bases this season while helping lead the Vols back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Teams feature 15 members with a 4.0 GPA or higher and 26 members with at least a 3.90 GPA as either undergraduate or graduate student-athletes. The 12 members on the first team have an average GPA of 3.98.

To be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America distinction, nominees must have reached at least sophomore academic standing and have a 3.30 GPA or higher to go along with legitimate on-field contributions.
