Virtual press conferences are now the reality as the coronavirus continues to alter sports. With the planned start of the season pushed back to Sept. 26 and the ramp-up to the season finally providing content on SEC football, I’m sharing press conferences from around the league.
Here’s Will Muschamp’s pre-practice meeting with the media on Wednesday courtesy of South Carolina Athletics. Below that are some of what we learned from the Gamecocks head coach.
Vinny’s Virtual View
-Team has handled the summer well
-Says July positive covid cases in state of SC are between 14 & 16% while it’s 5% within their building with two being guys that came in from out of town and got immediately tested, so he’s proud of how his team is handling the difficult circumstances
-Emphasizes to his players constantly to live boring lives during all this
-His son plays football at Georgia and he feels like that’s the safest place for him, same protocols as SC
-Extremely disappointed they couldn’t play Clemson…they voted for a plus-one format
-LB Rosendo Louis Jr. has a torn quad, will be back in mid-Sept
-WR Chad Terrell still recovering from ACL injury, expected back mid-Sept.
-True freshman WR/TE Jaheim Bell still recovering from knee injury in high school, thinks he’ll be cleared first of Oct.
-True freshman TE/LB Eric Shaw has some bone spurs, should be back in two weeks’
-Starting MLB Ernest Jones had his appendix removed, he’ll be back in a couple of weeks
-Two players have opted out for the 2020 season: OL Mark Fox and OL Jordan Rhodes
-He’s really excited about the quarterback room
-Raved about freshman QB Luke Doty, who runs a sub 4.5 forty, will play multiple positions and teammates have picked him as one of the best 11 players on offense
-Pointed out WRs Shi Smith, Xavier Legette, Dakereon Joyner and Fr. Rico Powers Jr as guys they can win with
-Really excited about his freshman class
-Hope to find out his two added SEC games
Those were a few of his opening comments with plenty of Q&A afterwards
