ennessee’s Nya Robertson has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday morning.
Robertson had a record-setting week, taking down the Lady Vol single-game three-point field goal standard and matching her career high in scoring as the No. 15/13 Lady Vols won a pair of contests to run their victory string to five games and improve to 5-1 on the season.
Entering Sunday averaging 7.4 ppg. and with five three-point field goals to her credit through her first five games at UT, the 5-foot-7 senior from Fort Worth, Texas, exploded for a career-high-tying 32 points vs. Coppin State, hitting a record 10 threes in 16 attempts to reset the UT women’s record for treys and card the second-most attempts. The 10 makes tied for third in SEC women’s basketball history.
For the day, Robertson finished 11 of 19 from the field for 57.9-percent accuracy and shot 62.5 percent beyond the arc. She also added three rebounds, three steals, an assist and a blocked shot in 27 minutes of duty as her team ran away from the Eagles, 88-35.
On Wednesday night in Murfreesboro, Robertson finished four of seven from the field (57.1 pct.), tallying nine points, three rebounds and an assist in 22 minutes of court time in the 85-41 Big Orange victory. She helped Tennessee match its highest margin of victory in the 25-game series at 44.
For the week Robertson made 15 of 26 field goal attempts (57.7), including 11-of-20 marksmanship from beyond the three-point arc, to average 20.5 points per contest. She also chipped in 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assists, as a UT squad with eight newcomers continued to play more in sync with each game. She also contributed to a defensive effort that held foes to an average of 38 points per game and forced them to average 31.5 turnovers as well.
Robertson is the second Lady Vol to earn TSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors this season. Talaysia Cooper picked up recognition on Nov. 10.
