THE TEAMS: Georgia (11-1, 7-1 SEC) is the #2 Seed and the visiting team. Alabama (10-2, 7-1 SEC) is the #1 Seed and the home team. Alabama will wear dark jerseys, while Georgia will wear white.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Georgia comes into the game as the No. 3-ranked team in the nation in the Associated Press, USA Today Coaches polls and in the College Football Playoff. Alabama is the No. 10-ranked team in the nation by the Associated Press/USA Today Coaches polls and No. 9 in the College Football Playoff. This is the 15th consecutive season the SEC Championship Game has featured a Top-15 matchup. This is the eighth time in nine years since the game moved to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to host a Top-10 matchup.
SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Only three times since 2006 (2014, 2023, 2024) has the winner of the SEC Championship Game failed to advance to the national championship game. This will mark the second straight season neither team in the championship game went undefeated in SEC play – prior to that since 2017 at least one team in the SEC Championship Game had been undefeated in SEC play. The game, which started in 1992, is in its 34th year. It was a result of conference expansion, which saw Arkansas and South Carolina become the first members added in SEC history. Nearly two million fans have witnessed the pageantry of the game first-hand, with now 31 sellouts in its history, including the last 29 consecutive contests. (Only 1993 and 1995 were not). The first two games were played at Legion Field in Birmingham and the game was played at the Georgia Dome from 1994-2016. This will mark the ninth SEC Championship Game played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This season is the second without divisional winners meeting in the SEC Championship Game.
SEC CHAMPIONS: Georgia will be vying for its 16th SEC Championship and third in the last four seasons. Alabama is aiming for its 31st SEC Championship.
TELEVISION: ABC will televise the game nationally for the second time since a 23-year hiatus Chris Fowler, Play-by-Play; Kirk Herbstreit, Analyst; Holly Rowe and LAURA RUTLEDGE, Sidelines; BILL BONNELL, Producer). ABC Sports also televised the game from 1992-2000.
TV RATINGS: The SEC Championship has been the most watched conference championship nationally for 16 of the past 17 seasons, including 12 in a row from 2008-2019. The only year it was not #1 was 2020 when the SEC did not have a traditional schedule due to the pandemic. The 2024 SEC Championship Game averaged 16.6 million viewers across ABC and ESPN, the fourth-largest audience on record for the game. The overtime win for Georgia, which peaked with 19.7 million viewers, delivered the largest audience of the college football season — surpassing the previous high set by the regular season matchup between the same two teams. Overall, the SEC title game last season delivered the third-largest regular season college football audience ever on the ESPN family of networks.
The 2023 SEC Championship Game averaged 17.519 million viewers, +61% vs. the previous year’s game, and peaked with 22.350 million viewers. It was the most-watched conference championship game on any network in five years. The 2021 SEC Championship attracted over 15 million viewers, the most watched championship game in college football since 2018. The 2018 SEC Championship Game was the most-watched and highest-rated regular-season college football game on any network in seven years with a 10.1/23 rating/share and 17.5 million viewers. It also marked the second most-watched SEC Championship ever in 26 years since the game debuted in 1992. The 2009 SEC Championship Game earned an 11.8 rating and a 24 share, marking the highest rated SEC Championship Game in history with 18 million viewers.
RADIO: Managed by Learfield IMG College, the SEC Radio Network will broadcast the game on a syndicated basis to the 11-state SEC region and around the nation via satellite radio on
SiriusXM. (SEC Radio Network: DAVE NEAL, Play-by-Play; DAVE ARCHER, Analyst; STEPHEN HARTZELL, Sidelines). The National/Learfield IMG broadcast is available on Sirius 84. The Georgia broadcast is available on channel 106 on Sirius and XM 190, while the Alabama broadcast is available on channel 162on Sirius and XM 191.
SERIES: Alabama leads the series with Georgia 44-26-6 dating to 1895. Georgia’s last win over the Crimson Tide came on Jan. 10, 2022 by a score of 33-18 and delivered the Bulldogs their first national championship since 1980. It capped a 14-1 season. Then, Georgia became the first team in the CFP-era to repeat as champions, going 15-0 in 2022. The Bulldogs went 12-0 in 2023 before falling to the Tide in the SEC Championship Game, ending a 29-game winning streak and missing the CFP. This year, UA came to Athens for the first time since 2015 and snapped Georgia’s record 33-game home winning streak.
IN THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: This is the fifth time Alabama and Georgia have squared off in the SEC Championship Game with the Crimson Tide winning all four previous matchups. Alabama won 32-28 in 2012, 35-28 in 2018, 41-24 in 2022 and 27-24 in 2023. Alabama has won 10 of the past 11 meetings dating back to 2008. Georgia had won the previous three meetings. Six of the previous 10 meetings between Alabama and Georgia have come in either the SEC Championship Game or the CFP National Championship Game. … This is the 12th consecutive SEC Championship Game to involve Alabama and/or Georgia.
