BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee true freshman cornerback Ty Redmond has been named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week after a standout performance that powered the Vols’ defense in a 42-9 homecoming victory over New Mexico State.
The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Semifinalist played 47 snaps on Saturday, recording five tackles, one pass breakup and a first-quarter interception that he returned nine yards to set up a Tennessee touchdown three plays later. He helped anchor a first-team defense that did not allow a touchdown.
The Alpharetta, Georgia, native leads all SEC freshmen in pass breakups (8), interceptions (2) and passes defended (10). He is tied for fifth overall in the league in passes defended and leads all Power Four freshmen in both PBUs and passes defended. Nationally, Redmond ranks second among all FBS freshmen, trailing only South Alabama’s Nehemiah Chandler, who has 11 PBUs and 13 passes defended.
This is Tennessee’s third freshman of the week honor, tying Kentucky for the most by a team in the SEC this season. Vols’ wide receiver Braylon Staley earned recognition following his performances earlier this season against Syracuse and Arkansas.
Tennessee has earned 49 weekly honors from the SEC under Heupel since 2021, including eight so far this season.
