An Investigation is Underway after an Early Morning Fire Displaces Residents and Heavily Damages a Condo

This morning (Tuesday) at 12:23 a.m., the Knox County Emergency Communications District received a 911 call from a female reporting that her condominium was on fire and that she could see flames. The female caller stated she was exiting the building with her two cats.

Upon the arrival at 4723 Royal Prince Way, the first Knoxville Fire Department units, a heavy fire was reported on the front side of the building, with fire in the attic space.

KFD crews quickly went to work attacking the fire and were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arrival on the scene.

The fire was contained to one room, the front portion of the attic, and the front of the building. The home has suffered heavy fire, water, and smoke damage.

No injuries were reported.

One female occupant and two cats have been displaced from this unit. Additionally, one family in the adjacent unit has been temporarily displaced due to smoke and fire damage.

The unit had working smoke alarms, which alerted the female to the fire. The female occupant stated, “I was asleep, and the smoke alarms woke me up.”

The Knoxville Fire Department’s Fire Investigations unit is on scene and is working to determine the cause.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.

“ Smoke Alarms save lives and in this case certainly contributed to the occupant calling 911 early and the fire department being able to get a fast stop on the fire.” Says Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks

Knoxville, TN (WVLT) Knox County Schools is planning to make some big changes to how it operates, and it wants input from families to iron out priorities for the future.

It marks the first major initiative from the school district’s 2030 plan: innovative schools. The system announced Friday that it had launched a survey for parents and students, asking them what the district should focus on, including topics from this list:

  • Language immersion

  • Outdoor classrooms
  • Debate-focused instruction
  • Varied uses of technology

Feedback from the survey, which is open until Friday, Sept. 19, will directly impact how the district moves forward, KCS said.

KCS said its already seen success from implementing new learning systems at schools like L&N STEM Academy and Career Magnet Academy. The first new school to take on new instruction programming will be the Kindergarten through eighth grade school being build in the Mechanicsville area. The district said to expect community meetings to help design instruction at the school.

“We intend to be the first choice for families and the best choice for students–not just in Knox County, but across the region,” Superintendent Dr. Rysewyk said. “Initiatives like the one we’re launching today will be instrumental in making that goal a reality.”
