Braves put Travis d’Arnaud on 60-day IL with thumb injury

Atlanta Braves starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday due to a sprained left thumb.

D’Arnaud suffered the injury Saturday evening during Atlanta’s 6-5 road loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He was hurt during the sixth inning on a tag play at the plate and left the game.

Afterward, manager Brian Snitker said that d’Arnaud “jammed his thumb, screwed it up. It’s not good.”

Also Sunday, the Braves’ placed backup catcher Alex Jackson on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring. Jackson replaced d’Arnaud in Saturday’s game.

The 32-year-old d’Arnaud is in his second season with the Braves and has two home runs and 11 RBIs with a .220 batting average this season. The nine-year veteran has played for the New York Mets (2013-18) and split the 2019 season with the Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays before joining Atlanta prior to the 2020 season.

Third-year-veteran Jackson, 25, is 1-for-23 (.043) in 10 games this season.

In corresponding moves, the Braves recalled catchers Willson Contreras and Jeff Mathis from their alternate site.
