Five-star prospect TyTy Washington commits to Kentucky

Five-star prospect TyTy Washington committed to play basketball at Kentucky next season.

Washington announced the decision Wednesday night, selecting the Wildcats over Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, LSU and Oregon. He initially committed to Creighton before reopening his recruitment in March.

The 6-foot-3 point guard played for AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Ariz. He is considered to be one of the best point guards in the Class of 2021.

Washington said he was eager to play for John Calipari.

“There is a big challenge at Kentucky for playing time and a leadership role,” Washington said to ESPN. “I always liked a challenge. The first time I spoke to Coach Cal, he said if you are not willing to bet on yourself, this is not the place for you.

“I have always been a big believer in myself no matter what. The belief comes from my parents, coaches, family and the work I put in, especially when times weren’t good.”

Kentucky is looking to bounce back from a rare bad season in which it went 9-16 and finished eighth in the Southeastern Conference at 8-9.

“Coach Cal has passion to develop me,” Washington said. “He was confident and straightforward on how I would fit and his plan for me. I could play both the point guard and also slide over to the wing because of my scoring ability. I watched a lot of film of Kentucky and they play a three-guard attack.”
