European prospect Igor Milicic will play college basketball at Virginia, he told ESPN.
Milicic, 18, is a 6-foot-9 forward who played with the Polish senior national team in the FIBA Eurobasket qualifiers in February. He also played as an amateur in Germany, mostly in the third division, and averaged 13.3 points and 4.9 rebounds.
“This was a very difficult and important decision in my career,” Milicic told ESPN. “My dream is to play basketball at the highest levels in the U.S. or Europe. I am aware that only hard work will get me there. I am determined to accomplish that goal. Where and when, it remains to be seen.”
He said he chose Virginia for its “basketball culture, great fans and really good academics.”
The Cavaliers are losing forwards Jay Huff, Sam Hauser and Trey Murphy from a team that finished 18-7 (13-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) in the 2020-21 season. They were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by No. 13 seed Ohio.
“The plan is to get better each day and hopefully over time I’ll become a key piece of the program,” Milicic said. “I am going to work all summer to be 100 percent prepared from day one.”
