Rookie Lucas Raymond nets first goal as Wings dump Jackets

Lucas Raymond scored his first NHL goal and added an assist and the host Detroit Red Wings topped the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old Raymond, the fourth pick in the 2020 draft, retreated to the locker room in the late going after taking a hard hit.

Tyler Bertuzzi supplied his fifth goal of the season. He scored four in the Red Wings’ opener against Tampa Bay.

Vladislav Namestnikov and Adam Erne added empty-net goals for Detroit, while Thomas Greiss made 22 saves.

Boone Jenner scored the lone Columbus goal, and Joonas Korpisalo stopped 41 shots.

The teams went scoreless in the first two periods. The Red Wings outshot the Blue Jackets 13-8 in the first period and 18-5 in the second.

Detroit had 10 of those shots on goal in the first seven minutes of the second period but still couldn’t break through. The Wings’ Filip Zadina banged a shot off the post midway through the period.

The Wings had a golden opportunity when the Blue Jackets’ Cole Sillinger was sent to the penalty box for high sticking and Sean Kuraly joined him 26 seconds later after tripping Dylan Larkin. Detroit still couldn’t get the puck past Korpisalo on the 5-on-3 advantage.

The Blue Jackets were down a man once again early in the third when Scott Harrington was called for tripping, but once again Korpisalo was up to the task.

The Wings finally solved him on Raymond’s souvenir goal. He fired a wrist shot from the right circle after Larkin nudged the puck to him, and it sailed over Korpisalo’s shoulder. Nick Leddy, who sent a lead pass to Larkin from just outside his own blue line, notched the second assist on the goal, which came at 6:17 of the period.

Bertuzzi made it 2-0 with a one-timer from the left circle off a feed from Larkin. He beat Korpisalo over the right shoulder. The goal came at 8:53 and was set up by Raymond’s pass from the blue line.

With Bertuzzi in the penalty box for roughing, the Blue Jackets got on the board at 12:51. Jenner scored his second goal this season, backhanding the puck over Greiss’ glove, thanks to Jakub Voracek’s pass from the point. Patrik Laine also got an assist.
