Tennessee released defensive lineman Emmit Gooden following his arrest on a felony aggravated domestic assault charge.
A university spokesperson confirmed Gooden’s departure to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
According to the publication, Gooden allegedly hit his girlfriend in the head with a glass jar candle. She sustained injuries near her left eye that required medical treatment at the university’s medical center.
Bond for Gooden was set at $10,000.
The Volunteers were counting on Gooden along the defensive line this fall after he missed 2019 with a torn ACL. He transferred to Tennessee in 2018 after spending the previous season at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he was part of the third season of “Last Chance U” on Netflix.
In his first season with the Volunteers, Gooden made 33 tackles.
In June, coach Jeremy Pruitt announced the release of Tim Jordan after the running back was arrested in Florida on gun and marijuana charges.
