Transfer King to start at QB for Hurricanes

Miami named D’Eriq King, a graduate transfer from Houston, the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback for the 2020 season.

“D’Eriq’s hard work both on and off the field has earned him the starting quarterback position,” coach Manny Diaz said in a news release Monday morning. “His leadership qualities have been evident since he arrived on campus, continuing through mat drills, spring practice, our virtual meetings and summer activities. We’re excited to see him lead this offense and I know his teammates are excited as well.”

King transferred to Miami in January and had been expected to win the job over incumbent N’Kosi Perry, Tate Martell, Tyler Van Dyke and Peyton Matocha.

King played in just four games this past season before choosing to redshirt and preserve his final year of eligibility. He entered the NCAA’s transfer portal on Jan. 13.

The 5-foot-11 King, from Manvel, Texas, was highly coveted for his dual-threat ability. He’s one of six quarterbacks in FBS history to account for 50 touchdowns in a single season, which he accomplished in 2018. He threw for 36 TDs and ran for 14 more before missing the final 2 1/2 games with a right knee injury.

King passed for 663 yards and six TDs and ran for another six TDs in his abbreviated 2019 season.

The Hurricanes were 6-7 this past season in Diaz’s first year as head coach.

Miami is scheduled to host Temple to open the season on Sept. 5.
