High-scoring East Carolina forward Jayden Gardner is transferring to Virginia.
“The experience, leadership and production he brings to our program is invaluable, and we look forward to having him join our program,” Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said in a news release Tuesday.
The 6-foot-7 Gardner averaged 18.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in 19 games (18 starts) for the Pirates in 2020-21 and was named to the All-American Athletic Conference first team.
“I’m excited about joining the University of Virginia,” Gardner said. “It’s a dream come true to be able to play in the ACC under one of best coaches in the world. I can’t wait to get to work as soon as I touch down on Grounds and get to connect with all the fans and members of Virginia. Thank you God for the opportunity and I’m not going to take it for granted.”
He led the AAC in scoring as a 2019-20 sophomore with 19.7 points per game to go with 9.2 rebounds. His career numbers include 18.0 points on 50.1 percent shooting with 8.7 rebounds in 81 games (79 starts).
