KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – With extreme temperatures forecast across East Tennessee, the City of Knoxville and several community organizations are providing cooling centers and resources for residents seeking relief from the heat.
Local shelters, churches and outreach groups have opened their doors to help vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness and individuals without adequate access to air conditioning. Some organizations are also encouraging community members to donate supplies or volunteer as demand for services grows during the heat wave.
Cooling Centers Available in Knoxville
Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM)
- 418 N. Broadway
- Open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Cooling shelter activated when the heat index reaches 85 degrees or higher
Volunteer Ministry Center (VMC)
- 511 N. Broadway
- Hours vary throughout the week
- White Flag heat shelter activated when temperatures reach 89 degrees or higher
Fig Tree at Cokesbury Church
- 9919 Kingston Pike
- Offers showers, clothing and hygiene items
- Extended hours may be available when temperatures exceed 90 degrees
ReLAUNCH
- Located beneath the Interstate 40 overpass across from KARM on Broadway
- Open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Provides shade, water and three meals each day
Vestal United Methodist Church
- 115 Ogle Avenue
- Cooling center hours generally run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., subject to daily adjustments

The City of Knoxville also maintains an online map showing public drinking fountains throughout the city, helping residents locate free water during periods of extreme heat.
Officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and seek air-conditioned spaces when possible.
