Parents Launch Petition, Cite Coach’s Impact Beyond the Football Field
KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Supporters of Karns High School head football coach Lee Warren are speaking out and organizing efforts to keep him with the program after recruiting violations resulted in sanctions against the school.
Hundreds of families have signed a petition calling on school leaders to retain Warren, whose future at Karns remains uncertain following a Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association investigation.
The TSSAA recently handed down penalties against the football program, including a postseason ban, thousands of dollars in fines, and a one-week suspension for Warren. The program will also be on probation during the upcoming season.
Despite those penalties, many parents say Warren’s influence extends well beyond wins and losses on the field.
Parents Praise Coach’s Community Impact
Karns parent Kathy Irwin said Warren has made a lasting difference in the life of her son Nathan, who has special needs and participates in game-day activities despite not playing football.
Irwin said her son proudly wears a football jersey on Fridays and has felt welcomed and included by the players and coaches.
“To see my son loved and included by those football players and the coaches is priceless to me,” Irwin said.
She recalled a moment that demonstrated Warren’s commitment to students outside athletics.
Following a difficult loss last season, Irwin said Warren attended her son’s Special Olympics event the very next morning.
“I’ll never forget it,” she said. “It meant so much to me.”
Community Organizes Support
Another Karns parent, Melissa Speight, said supporters have rallied around Warren since news of the sanctions became public.
Speight distributed signs during the game Warren was required to miss because of his suspension. The signs urged district and school leaders to keep him as head coach.
“We’re a family,” Speight said. “And I feel like as a family, if something happens to one of your own, you get behind them and you back them.”
She said support for Warren extends beyond football families.
“He has a community around him, not just parents of football players. There’s other parents. There’s other community members that are backing him staying at Karns,” Speight said.
Decision Expected Soon
According to Knox County Schools officials, the decision on Warren’s future ultimately rests with Karns High School leadership.
Parents said they met with school administrators Monday night to present their case for keeping Warren in place and to highlight his contributions to students and the community.
Supporters say they were told a decision could be announced by Nov. 4, although Knox County Schools officials said they could not confirm a specific timeline.
For now, families say they will continue advocating for the coach they believe has made a positive impact on the lives of students both on and off the field.
