KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – While Republicans maintained their grip on Tennessee’s statewide offices and several federal seats Tuesday night, election results in Knox County revealed a notable shift toward Democratic candidates that could signal changing political dynamics in East Tennessee.
Two of the state’s most closely watched races, the governor’s contest and Tennessee’s Second Congressional District race, were dramatically tighter than they were just four years ago.
In the race for governor, Democrat Jerri Green carried Knox County with 48.48% of the vote, defeating Republican nominee Marsha Blackburn, who received 42.42%. The outcome marked a stark contrast from 2022, when Republican Gov. Bill Lee won Knox County by more than 20 percentage points over Democrat Jason Brantley Martin.
The shift was equally apparent in Tennessee’s Second Congressional District, a seat widely regarded as one of the safest Republican districts in the nation. Republican Rep. Tim Burchett ultimately won re-election, but by a far narrower margin than in previous years.
In Knox County, Burchett received 78,125 votes, or 49.91%, while Democratic challenger Michaela Barnett earned 76,885 votes, or 49.12%. Fewer than 2,000 votes separated the candidates. In 2022, Burchett defeated Democrat Mark Harmon by more than 25,000 votes in Knox County alone.
University of Tennessee political science professor Dr. Andrew Busch previously described the district as one of the most secure Republican seats in America.
“It’s one of the safest Republican seats, or has always been perceived to be, in the United States,” Busch said before Election Day. “In fact, it’s the longest streak of a single party holding a congressional seat in the history of the United States.”
Political observers point to national trends as a major factor behind the tighter races. According to Associated Press voter polling, many voters expressed dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s administration, particularly regarding economic issues. Poll respondents cited concerns over rising costs, economic conditions and the direction of the country.
The polling indicated a majority of surveyed voters believed the nation’s economic situation had worsened under Trump’s policies, while more than half questioned his leadership capabilities.
Following significant Democratic gains nationwide, Vice President JD Vance argued that foreign policy issues, particularly the conflict with Iran, contributed to Republican setbacks during the midterm elections.
The results suggest that while Republicans continue to dominate statewide races in Tennessee, Democratic candidates are making gains in traditionally conservative areas such as Knox County. Whether the trend continues could have major implications for future congressional and statewide contests across East Tennessee.
