Jaland Lowe delivered 22 points and eight assists as Georgetown dominated Maryland with a long-range assault in an 86-74 victory in a D.C.-area rivalry game Saturday in Washington.
Elmarko Jackson contributed 17 points and Kayvaun Mulready added 15 points, all on 3-pointers, as the Hoyas (2-0) beat the Terrapins (1-1) for the second straight year.
The schools, which are located about 10 miles apart, had played only four times in the previous 30 years before agreeing to a four-year series which began last season.
Pharrel Payne supplied 28 points and eight rebounds for the Terrapins, who led briefly in the opening minutes before falling behind by 18 points late in the first half.
Georgetown did it with sharpshooting from the perimeter. The Hoyas made 15 of 30 attempts from 3-point range and 51.9% overall.
Lowe, a transfer from Kentucky, made 5 of 8 shots from beyond the arc while Mulready hit 5 of 9. Jackson, a transfer from Kansas, connected on 3 of 5 from deep.
Meanwhile, Maryland struggled from long range, hitting just three of its 20 shots from 3-point distance (15%) and 41.3% of its field-goal attempts overall.
Early in the game, Andre Mills gave Maryland a 9-7 lead when he hit consecutive jumpers, including one from beyond the arc. But Georgetown answered with the next six points to take the lead for good.
Midway through the first half, the Hoyas went on a 10-2 run triggered by a pair of baskets by Vince Iwuchukwu (12 points) and finished by 3-pointers from Lowe and Jackson that made it 29-17.
Late in the half, triples from Lowe and Mulready ignited a 12-point Georgetown spree. A putback by Chol Machot closed the run and gave the Hoyas their biggest lead of the period, 44-26.
The Hoyas continued their domination as they outscored the Terps 12-3 early in the second half. Lowe and Mulready made triples in the blitz that expanded Georgetown’s lead to 56-31.
The Hoyas repeatedly beat the Terrapins down the floor. The 7-foot-1 Iwuchukwu provided two examples with transition slams 29 seconds apart in the second half, which were part of Georgetown’s 23-9 edge on fastbreak points.
In the final four minutes, Maryland freshman Kaden House (13 points) hit two 3-pointers and made a powerful fastbreak slam. The Terrapins scored the game’s final 10 points to make the final score appear more respectable.
