UPDATE: CLINTON, Tenn. (Story courtesy of WVLT) – A person is in custody and another was taken to the hospital after a Sunday evening shooting, according to the Clinton Police Department.
CPD said officers responded to the Super 8 Motel on Park Place just before 6:30 p.m. There, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Emergency crews treated the man on the scene until he was flown to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
According to court documents obtained by WVLT News, the incident began after a fight broke out outside of the motel. During the fight, the suspect, identified as Charles Overton, fired a shot at the victim, who then began a fight with Overton before being separated.Overton later told police he shot the victim because “he was repeatedly being struck” by the victim, but witness statements and video evidence contradicted this. Additionally, he said he had been drinking before the incident.
Overton was charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of a handgun while under the influence, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

The Clinton Police Department say it happened last night (Sunday) at the Super 8 motel on Park Place.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was airlifted to the hospital, his condition has not been released.
Officers arrested the suspect at the scene without incident.
CPD is working to find out what led up to the shooting.
