COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (Story Courtesy of WVLT) – Crews responded to a large fire in Cocke County Friday afternoon.
Cocke County Fire Chief Cody Keys said a call for the fire came in around 12:42 p.m. for a junk pile on fire at Limitless Solutions off of Old Asheville Highway.
“When we get here and we see the plume of smoke that we had, I mean, it was a lot of fire. My first thing that goes through my head is, are we going to have enough water? Where’s my hydrants at? Where’s everybody at?” Keys said. “After I seen how large the fire was, I ended up doing a county all-call. I got with the city chief and we made the decision to do a county all-call. So we got the rest of all of Cocke County volunteers, including Newport Rescue Squad and Cosby and Parrottsville and Del Rio.”
Chief Keys said his main concern was not knowing what items were near the fire and what would happen if it spread.
“The main thing that I was worried about is there was a lot of stuff in there that was unknown that was blowing up, that was exploding and popping off,” Chief Keys said. “I don’t know what it was. It could have been an old air tank…it could have been tires…water heaters, it literally could have been anything.”
Crews were able put out the fire after a few hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Editor’s Note: WVLT was initially told that HAZMAT responded to the fire, but Chief Keys confirmed to us that HAZMAT was not there.
