Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – A new national report is highlighting rapid growth across several Tennessee cities, including Knoxville, naming them among the country’s latest “boomtowns.”
The report from SmartAsset analyzed more than 400 U.S. cities with populations of at least 65,000, ranking them based on growth in housing, labor force and economic output over the past five years.
Four Tennessee cities made the top 75 list: Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Franklin and Knoxville.
Clarksville ranked highest in the state at number 23, driven by an 18% increase in housing units, a 31% rise in its labor force and nearly 5% annual GDP growth.
Murfreesboro followed closely at number 25, with strong gains in housing and workforce growth, along with a 4.7% increase in GDP.
Franklin came in at number 57, boosted by steady economic growth and housing expansion, while Knoxville ranked number 69. Knoxville saw a 6% increase in housing, an 18% jump in labor force and about 4.5% GDP growth.
According to the report, “boomtown” status signals expanding economic opportunity and growth, but it can also come with challenges such as infrastructure strain and unequal access to those benefits.
Nationally, the strongest growth trends were concentrated in the South and West, with Florida and Texas leading the way. Georgetown, Texas, ranked number one overall.
