KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT)— The Love Kitchen is receiving additional community support as it continues recovering from a fire that temporarily disrupted operations and destroyed a significant portion of its food inventory earlier this month.
Food City announced Tuesday that it donated $1,000 in gift cards to help the Knoxville nonprofit replenish food supplies lost after a fire broke out at the facility on July 3.
Although no injuries were reported in the fire, power loss in storage areas forced The Love Kitchen to discard a large amount of food, creating an immediate challenge for the organization that provides thousands of meals to people in need each week.
Three Food City representatives visited the nonprofit to present the donation, including Special Events Manager Betsi James and Knoxville Division Executive Vice President of Store Operations Joe Greene. The gift cards were presented to Love Kitchen Executive Director Martin Riggins.
The donation is the latest example of community organizations stepping in to help The Love Kitchen maintain services during its recovery.
In the days following the fire, several East Tennessee nonprofits and service organizations quickly offered assistance. Mobile Meals agreed to prepare 2,100 meals during the week after the fire, helping ensure homebound residents continued receiving food deliveries while The Love Kitchen dealt with damage assessments and insurance inspections.
Additional support came from Second Harvest Food Bank, CARM and FISH, which offered resources, food assistance and access to kitchen space to help the organization continue serving the community.
Riggins previously acknowledged the recovery process would not happen overnight but said the organization’s mission remains unchanged despite the setback.
“Yes, we’re having a hard time. They have a hard time every single day,” Riggins said. “And for us to be able to just cry about it that we can’t do it — no, we’re going to figure something out. And we will. But this is an elephant that’s just going to have to be eaten one bite at a time.”
The Love Kitchen has been a longtime resource for families, seniors and homebound residents across the Knoxville area, providing meals and food assistance to those facing hardship.
With help from local businesses and partner nonprofits, organization leaders say they are continuing to work through recovery efforts while ensuring meal services remain available for those who depend on them.
