WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Human remains discovered along the Nolichucky River over the weekend are believed to belong to a victim of Hurricane Helene, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the remains were found Saturday afternoon in the Jackson Island area of the Nolichucky River during an ongoing search and recovery effort connected to the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene.
Investigators believe the remains are those of an individual who was swept away during the historic flooding that struck Northeast Tennessee when the storm moved through the region.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the remains were recovered and transported to the William Jenkins Forensic Center at East Tennessee State University for positive identification.
Officials have not released the identity of the individual pending confirmation by the medical examiner and notification of family members.
Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding across parts of East Tennessee, damaging homes, businesses, roads and bridges while prompting widespread rescue and recovery operations. Several people were reported missing following the storm, and recovery efforts have continued for months in some areas impacted by the flooding.
Authorities have not released additional details about where the remains were located or how long they may have been in the river.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and ongoing as officials work to positively identify the remains and determine whether they are connected to one of the individuals reported missing following Hurricane Helene.
