KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — A Knoxville man with a lengthy felony record is facing multiple charges after leading officers on a foot pursuit following a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, officers stopped a Jeep Compass around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after the driver allegedly failed to stop before entering the roadway while leaving a Shell gas station on Summit Hill Drive.
Police said shortly after the stop was initiated, a backseat passenger exited the vehicle and ran from officers.
The suspect was identified as 46-year-old Benondre Hurey.
Officers pursued Hurey on foot through the area before taking him into custody at the Vista at Summit Hill apartment complex, according to KPD.
Gun and Fentanyl Recovered
Following the chase, officers recovered a handgun and what police described as a small amount of fentanyl.
Investigators subsequently charged Hurey with:
- Convicted Felon in Possession of a Weapon
- Evading Arrest
- Simple Possession
Extensive Criminal History
According to Knoxville Police, Hurey has prior felony convictions for:
- Second-Degree Murder
- Aggravated Robbery
- Felony Theft
Because of those prior felony convictions, police say Hurey is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Court Date Scheduled
Hurey was booked into custody following the incident and is scheduled to appear in court on August 20.
The investigation remains ongoing.
