Pinch hitter Edmundo Sosa hit a go-ahead grand slam with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night in Anaheim, Calif.
Sosa drove a 1-1 changeup from Sammy Peralta 404 feet into the rock pile behind the fence in left-center for his sixth home run of the season and first career grand slam.
Angels closer Ben Joyce (0-2) had loaded the bases in the inning by hitting Alec Bohm with a one-out pitch and walking Justin Crawford and J.T. Realmuto, the latter after right fielder Wade Meckler reached over the fence to rob Bryson Stott of a three-run go-ahead homer for the second out of the inning.
Sosa was the first batter Peralta faced.
Luis Arraez and Kyle Schwarber each had two hits and Bohm scored two runs for Philadelphia, which won for the 11th time in 13 games. Alex McFarlane (4-1) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief, and Jonathan Bowlan struck out Jose Siri and pinch hitter Adam Frazier with two men on in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his second save.
Meckler went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run for Los Angeles, which scored two runs on wild pitches during a three-run first inning. The Angels took their fifth straight loss.
Los Angeles took advantage of Philadelphia starter Andrew Painter’s wildness while building a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Zach Neto led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Mike Trout and then scored on a single to center by Meckler. Vaughn Grissom then sacrificed the runners along to second and third, a move that would pay big dividends as Trout and Meckler would later both score on wild pitches.
Philadelphia cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth inning, snapping a 20-inning scoreless streak by Angels starter Reid Detmers. Bohm and Bryan De La Cruz opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Bohm went to third on a flyout by Stott. One out later, Derek Hill drove in Bohm with a bunt single up the first base line.
The Phillies had a chance to add on another run when Schwarber followed with a single to right. However, De La Cruz, who ran through a stop sign at third, hesitated between third and home and ended up getting thrown out easily at home by Josh Lowe to end the inning.
