NEYLAND STADIUM, PRESERVED BY PILOT

Neyland Stadium has been home of the Vols for more than 100 years and that legacy will live on thanks to a transformative partnership with Tennessee Athletics and Knoxville-based Pilot, the largest network of travel centers in North America. In August 2024, Tennessee and Pilot announced the partnership that preserves the iconic venue’s name and enhances the stadium experience for future generations. Under the terms of the agreement, which is slated for up to 20 years and could extend further, the names of Neyland Stadium and Shields-Watkins Field will remain unchanged.

NEED TO KNOW

The Neyland Effect
Neyland Stadium has been a true difference maker and is once again one of the most intimidating environments in all of college football. The Vols have been one of the nation’s best at home under head coach Josh Heupel with a 26-4 record at Neyland Stadium during his tenure. UT is 21-1 on Rocky Top since 2022 and has won nine straight at home entering Saturday’s showdown with the Dawgs. Last Saturday’s victory over ETSU was the 500th on-field victory in the history of Shields-Watkins Field (1921-pres.).

Joey Football Off to Hot Start
Despite arriving after spring ball and having a very condensed timeframe to learn the offense, Joey Aguilar has looked like a multi-year vet in Heupel’s system through two weeks this season. Tennessee’s new QB1 has completed 39 of 59 pass attempts for 535 yards and five touchdowns and has not thrown an interception. Aguilar has spread the ball around to a plethora of weapons as all five of his passing touchdowns have gone to different players.

The California native will be making his 27th career FBS start on Saturday after a record-setting two-year stint at Appalachian State. Aguilar enters the contest as the FBS career leader in total offense per game (288.2) and passing yards per game (270.2).

PB “U”
Tennessee’s defense has made things difficult for opposing quarterbacks and wide receivers so far this season, leading the SEC and ranking tied for second nationally with 14 pass breakups. The Vols recorded an SEC-best 10 pass breakups in Week 1 against Syracuse, which were their most in a game since recording 10 at Georgia on Oct. 9, 2004.

In the absence of preseason All-American corner Jermod McCoy, Colorado transfer Colton Hood has made an immediate impact, ranking tied for second in the FBS and leading the SEC in pass breakups with five.

Fast Starts the Norm in Knoxville
The Big Orange have outscored opponents 584-202 in the first quarter under Heupel: 190-51 in 2021, 141-72 in 2022, 110-46 in 2023, 102-54 in 2024 and 41-0 in 2025. The Vols have scored at least one touchdown in the first quarter in 42 of 54 games under Heupel. In 90 games as a head coach, Heupel’s squads have outscored opponents 1,031-437 in the first quarter (584-202 at UT, 447-214 at UCF).

Since 2018, no active Power 4 head coach scores more points per first quarter in a career than Heupel (11.46). From 2021-present under Heupel, the Vols are first in the nation in first-quarter scoring at 10.81 points per game. Heupel’s teams have scored at least one touchdown in the first quarter in 75 of the 90 games he has coached.

SERIES HISTORY

Georgia leads, 29-23-2
This year marks the 34th consecutive season that Tennessee and Georgia will have faced off on the gridiron dating back to 1992. This Saturday will be the earliest meeting on the calendar (Sept. 13) between the two teams in 30 years since UT won 30-27 in Knoxville on Sept. 9, 1995. The last four games between the two programs have been played in November.

This is the 19th contest between the Vols and Bulldogs where both teams are ranked in the AP Poll with the Vols holding a slight 10-8 advantage in those previous games. It’s the fourth straight year that both teams are ranked at the time of the meeting as UT will be looking to snap an eight-game skid to the Bulldogs.

ABOUT GEORGIA

Georgia enters Saturday’s ranked showdown at 2-0 following home wins over Marshall (45-7) and Austin Peay (28-6). The Bulldogs are led by head coach Kirby Smart, who is in his 10th season in charge and owns a 107-19 career record.

After waiting his turn, redshirt junior Gunner Stockton has assumed the role of starting quarterback for UGA and will provide a stiff challenge for Tennessee’s defense as a passer and a runner. Stockton comes into Saturday having completed 40-of-58 passes for 417 yards and two touchdowns while also having rushed for 86 yards and two scores. The Bulldogs boast a deep and talented group of pass catchers for Stockton to throw to, led by wideouts Colbie Young (9 rec., 106 yds) and Zachariah Branch (6 rec., 112 yds, 1 TD). Veteran tight ends Oscar Delp and Lawson Luckie also pose a threat in the passing game.

Nate Frazier leads the running back group for Georgia with 25 attempts for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Dwight Phillips Jr. has added 115 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries while Chauncey Bowers has also found the end zone twice this season.

The Dawgs once again feature one of the country’s top defensive units, having allowed an SEC-low 6.5 points per game while holding opponents to just 201.5 total yards per game. Junior linebacker Raylen Wilson leads the unit with 14 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack to go along with four quarterback pressures. Sophomore safety KJ Bolden leads the secondary with 10 tackles and a pass breakup.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Friday that authorities have captured the suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

“We got him,” Cox said. “On the evening of September 11, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.”

“Investigators interviewed a family member of Robinson who stated that Robinson had become more political in recent years,” Cox continued. “The family member referenced a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner prior to September 10, and in that conversation with another family member, Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU. They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had.” Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Utah Valley University.

FBI Director Kash Patel said Friday following the arrest of the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination that, “In 33 hours, we have made historic progress for Charlie.”

A resurfaced interview clip has become a poignant reminder of Charlie Kirk’s words and the legacy he leaves behind.

During a June 29 appearance on “The Iced Coffee Hour,” Kirk was asked by host Jack Selby how he wants to be remembered if “everything completely goes away.”

“I want to be remembered for courage, for my faith,” Kirk said in the widely circulated clip. “That would be the most important thing; most important thing is my faith,” he added.

Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, was unapologetic defender of conservative values and the Christian faith.

President Donald Trump said on “FOX & Friends” Friday that conservative activist Charlie Kirk “in many ways, he’s bigger now because of what happened.”

“You know, we have so many bad people, so many bad philosophies, ideologies, politics. His was basically just good,” Trump said.

“He talked about family, talked about getting married, go get married. You know, sounds old fashioned when you think about it. But he’s right. He was just, he was just on. And it’s a shame that that voice has been stopped,” Trump added.

The president also said he “didn’t watch” videos circulating on social media of Kirk’s shooting.

“I didn’t want to remember Charlie that way,” Trump said.

Trump on Charlie Kirk’s assassin: ‘I hope he gets the death penalty’

President Donald Trump said Friday on “Fox & Friends” that he hopes Charlie Kirk’s assassin gets the death penalty.

“I hope he’s going to be found guilty, I would imagine. And I hope he gets the death penalty,” Trump said. “What he did, Charlie Kirk was the finest person, he didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard and so well. Everybody liked him.”

Trump made the remarks after announcing an arrest was made in the manhunt for Kirk’s assassin.

The president said, “essentially somebody that was very close” to the suspect turned him in.

“Somebody that was very close to him said, ‘hmm, that’s him.’ And essentially went to the father, went to a U.S. marshal who was fantastic, by the way, and the person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a U.S. Marshal who was fantastic and the father convinced the son, this is it,” Trump said.

What we know about the gun used to kill Charlie Kirk

What we know about the gun used to kill Charlie Kirk

An FBI agent looks near Utah Valley University where evidence was collected as authorities investigate the shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk on September 11, 2025, in Orem, Utah. (Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images)

The gun recovered by authorities in the assassination of Charlie Kirk was a bolt-action rifle — a common hunting weapon valued for its reliability but limited to a single shot before reloading.

Unlike a semiautomatic, the shooter must manually operate the bolt handle to cycle the weapon: lifting and pulling it back moves the spent cartridge, while pushing it forward chambers a new round from the magazine. Lowering the bolt locks the round and seals the chamber, making the rifle ready to fire again — a simple, durable design that has kept it popular among hunters and target shooters.

“This process limits the rate of fire, you can only take one shot at a time,” explained retired Marine Lt. Col. Hal Kempfer in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Kempfer noted that with a bolt-action rifle, the spent cartridge often remains in the chamber rather than being ejected, meaning shooters don’t leave behind shell casings or “brass” that investigators can use for forensics.

“That’s just one of those things where you, if you’ve thought it through, you know that you can’t leave any forensic evidence for investigators to work with,” he said.

Senator Marsha Blackburn Calls for Termination of a Secret Service Agent

Blackburn Calls for Immediate Termination of Secret Service Agent Following His Reprehensible Social Media Post Suggesting Charlie Kirk Deserved Assassination

‘I implore you to ensure that this employee never steps foot in the Secret Service headquarters ever again.’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) sent a letter to United States Secret Service Director Sean Curran calling for the immediate termination of a U.S. Secret Service agent after a report exposed his reprehensible social media post about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. This Secret Service agent stated that “if you are Mourning [sic] this guy . . [sic] delete me.” This agent went on to say that “you can’t circumvent karma, [sic] she doesnt [sic] leave.”

The Secret Service Must Immediately Terminate the Employee Who Suggested Charlie Kirk Deserved to Be Assassinated

“As our nation continues to mourn the horrific and heartbreaking death of Charlie Kirk, an iconic figure in American politics, I write regarding deeply disturbing reporting that has surfaced this evening indicating that one of your employees applauded this atrocity. This Secret Service agent stated in a social media post that ‘if you are Mourning [sic] this guy . . [sic] delete me. He spewed hate and racism on his show.’ The vitriol did not stop there. This agent went on to say that ‘you can’t circumvent karma, [sic] she doesnt [sic] leave.’ Put simply, your employee celebrated and attempted to justify a political assassination. This conduct is inexcusable, and I urge you in the strongest possible terms to immediately terminate his employment.”

The Secret Service Has Been an Agency Full of Political Actors and Is in Desperate Need of Reform

“As you well know, over the last year, the United States Secret Service has been an agency full of political actors and one in desperate need of reform. Under the failed leadership of Director Kimberly Cheatle, a massive operational failure within the Secret Service nearly led to President Trump’s assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania. Just two months later, there was a second attempt on President Trump’s life. Even more concerning, it took two assassination attempts before the Secret Service finally elevated President Trump’s security detail to that of a sitting president. Those blatant failures will forever be a stain on the Secret Service, and this incident today makes clear that—one year later—bad actors must be rooted out of your agency. President Trump—and all Secret Service protectees—deserve nothing less. You noted in a statement earlier this year that you recognize ‘the importance of accountability’ at the Secret Service. I implore you to abide by that statement and ensure that this employee never steps foot in Secret Service headquarters ever again.”

Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 2:

  • All-Time Aaron: Making his Pittsburgh debut in Week 1, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers recorded his 28th career game with at least four touchdown passes and no interceptions, tied with Tom Brady for the most in NFL history. Rodgers has 507 career regular-season touchdown passes and against Seattle (1 p.m. ET, FOX), can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre (508 touchdown passes) for the fourth-most regular-season touchdown passes all-time. Additionally, Rodgers has 63,196 career regular-season passing yards and can surpass Philip Rivers (63,440 passing yards) for the sixth-most regular-season passing yards in NFL history.

  • Super Bowl LIX Rematch: The Kansas City Chiefs host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX) in a rematch of Super Bowl LIX. To end the 2024 season, the Eagles defeated the Chiefs, 40-22, as quarterback Jalen Hurts totaled 293 yards (221 passing, 72 rushing) and three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) to earn Super Bowl MVP honors.
    • Hurts rushed for two touchdowns in the Eagles’ Week 1 victory over Dallas, his 16th career regular-season game with multiple rushing touchdowns, the most among quarterbacks in NFL history.
    • Kansas City was one of two teams, along with Buffalo, to go undefeated at home last season. Since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback in 2018, Kansas City has the most home wins (45) and the highest home winning percentage (.776) in the NFL.
    • Mahomes enters Week 2 with 292 career touchdown passes, including the playoffs, and can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (293 touchdown passes) for the most touchdown passes by a player in his first nine seasons, including the postseason, in NFL history.
    • Chiefs-Eagles will mark the 11th rematch of a Super Bowl in the following season all-time and the fourth to occur within the first two weeks of that season. The Super Bowl winning team has won seven of the 10 previous rematches.

On Kickoff Weekend, 12 games were decided by one score (eight points), tied with 2013 for the most such games in Week 1 all-time.
  • Importance of Week 1 Results: Since 1990, history has shown that teams that are victorious in their season openers are more than twice as likely to advance to the playoffs as teams that lose their opener. During that span, 54.2 percent of teams (294 of 542) to win their opener have advanced to the playoffs, including both of last year’s Super Bowl participants – the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. However, an 0-1 start is not impossible to overcome, as 25 percent of teams (136 of 541) since 1990 that lost a season opener advance to the playoffs, including five teams in 2024 – the Baltimore RavensDenver BroncosGreen Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders
  • Special Teams: In Week 1, 75.6 percent of kickoffs were returned (118 of 156), up from 33.1 percent in Week 1 in 2024 (57 of 172). Last week, there were 3,074 kickoff return yards, the most in a Week 1 all-time and the most in any week in 15 years (3,233 kickoff return yards in Week 15, 2010).
  • 1-0 matchups: Four matchups this week showcase two teams that each earned wins to open the season.
    • Washington (1-0) at Green Bay (1-0) on Thursday (8:15 p.m. ET, Prime Video): Set to meet for the first time since the 2022 season, both Washington and Green Bay earned home victories in Week 1 after qualifying for the postseason last year. The Commanders can begin 2-0 for the third time in the past 15 seasons (2011 and 2023) while the Packers look to begin 2-0 for the first time since 2020.
      • Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels, in 11 career road starts (including the postseason), has 20 touchdowns (15 passing, five rushing) and a 104.6 passer rating, including at least two touchdown passes and a passer rating of 100-or-higher in six of those road starts.
      • Green Bay defensive lineman Micah Parsons registered a sack in his Packers debut in Week 1. In eight career games against Washington, he has 10.5 sacks – including at least a half sack in seven of eight contests. Last season with Dallas, Parsons had two sacks in Week 12 and 2.5 sacks in Week 18 against the Commanders.
    • Jacksonville (1-0) at Cincinnati (1-0) on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Both Jacksonville and Cincinnati look to begin 2-0 for the first time since 2018.
      •  Jacksonville running back Travis Etienne ranked second in the NFL with 156 scrimmage yards (143 rushing, 13 receiving) in Week 1, his third-career game with at least 150 scrimmage yards.

In NFL history, only two players have had at least three touchdown passes and a passer rating of 110-or-higher in five consecutive home starts: Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (six consecutive games in 2014) and Aaron Rodgers (five in 2011).
    • Denver (1-0) at Indianapolis (1-0) on Sunday (4:05 p.m. ET, CBS): Denver looks to begin 2-0 for the first time since 2021 while Indianapolis can start 2-0 for the first time since 2009. Last season in Week 15, the Broncos defeated the Colts, 31-13, in Denver.
      • After leading the NFL with 63 sacks last season, the Broncos defense recorded a league-high six sacks and allowed a league-low 133 total yards of offense in Week 1. It has been 26 seasons since a team recorded at least six sacks in each of its first two games of a season (Carolina and Seattle in 1998).
      • The Colts defeated Miami, 33-8, in Week 1, marking their first season-opening win since 2013. They scored on all seven of their offensive possessions, becoming the first team in at least 47 years (1978 season) to score on every offensive possession of a game.

QUARTERBACK TRENDS

Quarterback efficiency was a trend across the NFL on Kickoff Weekend, as there were 16 interceptions thrown in Week 1, the fewest in a season-opening week since the 1970 merger.

If 24 or fewer interceptions are thrown in Week 2, it would mark the lowest total through two weeks since 1970, surpassing the 2008 season (41 interceptions).
