USPS to Review Mail Processing at Knoxville Distribution Center, Public Input Encouraged

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) A USPS processing and distribution center in Knoxville is soon to come under review by the feds, and your input as part of that process is encouraged.

The “Mail Processing Facility Review” is part of the postal service’s “Delivering for America” plan, which involves spending around $40 billion to improve how mail is handled and delivered across the U.S.

A release from the USPS says the review will assess how the Knoxville facility can “best support service and operational goals.”

The review is expected to have little impact on customer service. Retail services, delivery services, post offices and business mail entry are expected to continue as normal while the review is conducted.

As part of the review process, the USPS is also collecting public input online; Knoxville-area residents can provide your comments here.

According to the release from USPS, if the review finds that the Knoxville facility should undergo changes, representatives will also hold a public meeting to give the community a chance to provide additional feedback.

Throughout the process, the USPS said it would work with management associations and unions to monitor the impact of changes that could be implemented and adjust those plans as needed.

Former Sevier County Sheriff Dies, Day of Mourning Recognized

Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters has issued a proclamation declaring today (Friday) a day of mourning to remember the life of former sheriff Ronald “Hoss” Seals, who passed away yesterday (Thursday).

Seals served as sheriff for just over 15 years in Sevier County from 2007 to 2022, capping a 49-year career in law enforcement.

As part of the planned day of mourning, the official flag of Sevier County will fly at half-staff until the end of the day, and the 1896 Bell atop the Historic Sevier County Courthouse rang a solemn toll for five minutes at 11 a.m.

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) We’re learning more now about the cause of a deadly fire early Wednesday morning in North Knox County.

Officials with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office say 66 year-old Karen Sue Rutledge of Knoxville died in a house fire on Fort Sumter Road.

They say the sheriff’s office and Rural Metro Fire responded to the single-wide home after neighbors called about it around 3:00 a.m. after hearing an explosion.

KCSO reports investigators were initially unable to determine the cause of the fire since the house was so damaged; however, based on witnesses and family statements, they say it is likely the blaze was started because someone was smoking near an oxygen tank.
