The State of the Child Report 2022 Shows Tennessee has the Highest Rate of Foster Care Instability in the U.S.

Tennessee has the highest rate of foster care instability in the nation according to information in The State of the Child 2022.

The annual report released by the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth shows our state has had the highest rate of foster care instability in the nation every year from 2016 to 2020. In the most recent data, Puerto Rico was the state or territory that came closest at 26% compared to Tennessee’s 34%.

The number of children living in poverty declined by 8% between 2019 and 2021.

In September 2022, 23% of Tennessee households with children reported sometimes or often not having enough to eat in the previous week.
