New Details in the Fire that Destroys Green Acres Flea Market

New details in the fire that destroyed the Green Acres Flea Market Saturday night.

Blount County building code officials say several of the buildings were listed as unsafe and people were barred from entering.

The county cited the buildings for not being up to international fire and building codes and causing fire safety concerns, specifically that they’re “dangerous to human life.”

The investigation into the fire remains on-going.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is still investigating a fatal boating accident on Norris Lake and has identified the victim in Sunday night’s accident.

59 year-old John Curley Jr. of Knoxville died when the personal watercraft he was operating collided with a 25-foot cuddy cabin style boat near Black Fox Access Area in Grainger County.

This marks the 12th fatal boating incident of the 2023 season.

Upon completion of the investigation, wildlife officers will present their findings to the district attorney’s office to determine if charges are warranted.

A woman is arrested in connection to the murder of 26 year-old John Willis, who was killed in 2021.

The Alcoa Police Department says Heidi Litton was arrested yesterday (Monday) with 11 indictments.

Another suspect, Steven Greene, was charged with criminal homicide in 2021 and pleaded guilty this year. APD officials say he cooperated with investigators to help indict Litton for planning the homicide.

Litton was taken to the Blount County Correction Facility and is being held on a $1 million bond.

The wait is over and we now know where the Vols Baseball team will play in the Super Regionals, they will play in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The NCAA making the announcement this morning. The committee has several criteria while considering host sites, they look at quality and availability of the facility, available accommodations and revenue potential.

Vols Baseball Coach Tony Vitello says we have a great venue but knows fans will be in Mississippi to cheer on his team this Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and on our sister station WNML.

Budget Plan for 2023-24 KCS School Year Will Promote Student Success

Knox County Commission on June 5, 2023, approved the General County Budget, which included the $660.7 million Fiscal Year 2024 general purpose budget for Knox County Schools, as well as the county-wide Capital Improvement Plan (including district construction projects).

The spending plan will make significant investments in crucial areas, including:

  • Investments in staff
    • 4% base salary increases for all certified and classified staff
    • An additional 8% base salary increase for custodians, school clerical, educational assistants, security officers and food service (for a total of 12%)
  • Investments in students
    • 20 new FTE interventionists (10 behavioral, 10 academic), allocated at 2 schools per region
    • 6 new FTEs at Richard Yoakley, KAEC, and Ridgedale
    • 18 new pre-K positions
  • Investments in schools
    • An increase in playground investments, from $90,000 (FY23) to $590,000 (FY24)
    • Three growth solutions
      • Farragut ($4 million)
      • Mechanicsville, Lonsdale, Beaumont ($3.4 million)
      • South Knoxville ($4.1 million in FY25)
    • $3 million in school security investments including locks, video systems, emergency communication, and perimeter security

Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The United States Postal Service is hosting two job fairs at a Knoxville post office this month.

The job fairs are part of the Postal Service’s “Delivering for America” campaign, a 10-year plan aiming to expand its workforce.

The job fairs are scheduled for June 7th and June 29th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held in the office at 1237 Weisgarber Rd.

Those interested in applying need to be at least 18 and available to work weekends and holidays.

Nashville, TN (WOKI/WVLT) Tennessee puts another point in the economic “win” column.

A new study from WalletHub finds the Volunteer State has the 15th best economy among states in the U.S. for 2023.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 key indicators of economic performance and strength to include GDP growth, startup activity, and share of jobs in high-tech industries.

Tennessee ranked 6th for economic activity, 9th for economic health, and 37th for innovation potential. The study indicates the state also saw the second-highest change in GDP behind Idaho at No. 1.

Greeneville, TN (WOKI) The Greeneville Police Department is asking for your help in finding a missing 15-year-old girl.

GPD officials say Brianna Weems was last seen leaving her home on Cherrydale Drive in Greeneville at 8:15 Monday morning, June 5.

Police report that she was riding a greenish-blue bicycle and possibly wearing black leggings.

The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees will be considering tuition and fee increases for each of its campuses when it meets on June 30 in Memphis.

In preparation for the meeting, the University has requested feedback from the public in accordance with Tennessee Code Annotated §49-7-1603, which requires boards of public universities to provide public notice of proposed increases to in-state, undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees at least 15 days prior to holding a public meeting.  Individuals may provide comments during the 15-day period, and a transcript of all comments will be provided to the UT Board of Trustees. The public comment period will end June 20 at 6 p.m. EDT. Anyone with a disability who wishes to provide feedback may contact the individuals listed below to request any additional assistance.

TWRA is Investigating a Fatal Boating Accident on Norris Lake and an Explosion at Concord Marina

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is investigating a fatal boating accident on Norris Lake in Grainger County.

It happened last night (Sunday) when a private boat collided with a jet ski near Black Fox Access Area. The man operating the private boat died at the scene. His body was taken for forensic analysis.

TWRA is also investigating a boat explosion on Ft. Loudon Lake at Concord Marina which sends four people to the hospital with burns.

It happened Saturday night after the boat finished fueling at the marina gas dock. The boat exploded and caught fire then burned to the waterline and sank.

All four occupants suffered burn injuries with three more seriously injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment then flown to the Vanderbilt burn center.
